This Vegan Cheese Fondue is made rich and creamy in 1 pot in just 10 minutes. Itโs rich, creamy, and easy for beginners. Serve at your holiday parties, as a game day appetizer, or for a Valentineโs Day date night at home.
This recipe was inspired by our recent trip to The Melting Pot (check out the video here). If you didnโt know, they have vegan fondue and some locations even have a 4-course vegan dinner option as well! After seeing them put together the vegan cheese fondue at our table and seeing just how easy it was to make, we thought we would have a go at it and share our version on the blog! The fondue was a success and we are so excited for you to try it out!
Ingredients Youโll Need & Substitutions
- Garlic: We highly recommend fresh garlic for the most flavorful fondue but in a pinch, you can substitute ยฝ teaspoon garlic powder.
- Vegan butter: We prefer vegan butter for its savoriness, but you can also use a neutral cooking oil such as vegetable oil or avocado oil.
- Flour: Helps thicken the cheese into the best, dippable consistency. If you are gluten-free, swap the all-purpose flour for 1 tablespoon of cornstarch.
- Alcohol: Alcohol is used in cheese fondue not only to add flavor, but to also lower the boiling point and keep the cheese from becoming stringy or curdling. We used a lager-style beer but a high quality, dry wine would work as well! We have also seen cheese fondues made with brandy or whiskey but have not tried it ourselves. If you would like to skip the beer in the recipe, we suggest you use vegetable broth in its place as well as add a squeeze of lemon juice or a touch of vinegar for acidity.
- Broth: We used vegetable broth but vegan beef broth or vegan chicken broth would also work for a bolder flavored vegan fondue.
- Vegan cheese: For the best flavored fondue, weโd recommend using a mix of a couple of shredded cheese. We used 8 ounces of vegan mozzarella and 8 ounces of vegan cheddar cheese. A blend of your favorite vegan cheese shreds will work!
- Mustard: A small amount of grainy mustard adds tanginess and brightness to balance the richness of the fondue.

- Medium pot
- Spatula or whisk
- Fondue pot (optional)
How to Make Vegan Fondue
- Cook the garlic. In a medium pot over medium heat, melt the vegan butter. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, constantly stirring until the garlic is fragrant.
- Add the flour. Mix it through until evenly the butter and garlic is evenly coated.
- Add the broth, vegan beer, and mustard. Mix until uniform, then bring the vegan fondue broth to a boil.
- Stir in the cheese. Once the fondue broth is simmering, stir in the cheese a little at a time, stirring well between each addition to ensure a smooth fondue.
- Adjust seasonings to taste. Taste and add additional salt, pepper, mustard or cheese as desired.
- Serve. If you have a fondue pot, transfer to the pot and light to keep the vegan fondue cheese warm. Serve with favorite dippers of choice and enjoy!
Dippers to Serve with Vegan Cheese Fondue
Of course, feel free to use whatever you would like to dip into your fondue, but here are our suggestions in case you donโt know where to start:
- Crackers
- Chips
- Cubed bread โ we like to used sourdough or french bread
- Carrots, sliced
- Celery, cut into small pieces
- Steamed broccoli
- Steamed cauliflower
- Granny Smith apples, cubed
- Roasted cubed potatoes
- Cherry tomatoes
Make it a Four-Course Meal
At the Melting Pot, you have the option of turning your fondue into a 4-course experience. If youโd like to do the same for the ultimate vegan date night in, here are our course recommendations!
- Course one: Start with the vegan cheese fondue and desired dippers (see our dipper ideas above).
- Course two: Enjoy a small salad. Weโd recommend our Brussels Sprouts Caesar Salad or Vegan Cobb Salad.
- Course three: The entree! Try our Vegan Fettuccine Alfredo, Easy Vegan Pasta Primavera or Vegan Portobello Mushroom Steaks with Vegan Mashed Potatoes and Simple Roasted Vegetables.

Storage Instructions
Leftover vegan fondue can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. For best results, reheat vegan cheese fondue on the stovetop over medium heat with a splash of vegetable broth to thin it out.
We have not tested it, but based on experience, we would not recommend freezing vegan cheese fondue. It will likely separate and be grainy in texture. Itโs so easy to make, itโs best to just plan on making it fresh!
Tips for Success
- Watch the heat. In order to prevent the fondue cheese from separating and becoming grainy, it is important to keep the heat fairly low. If it appears to boil too vigorously or is sticking to the bottom of the pot, lower the heat.
- Be careful when doubling the recipe. If you are making this vegan fondue for a crowd and are doubling the recipe, start with 1 ยฝ cups of broth and 1 ยฝ cups of beer instead of the full 2 cups of each. The liquid does not cook off as much in larger servings. Add additional at a time to thin it out as needed.
- Donโt let any fondue go to waste! Leftover fondue is delicious served with Crispy Oil-Free Noochy Potatoes or Broccoli Cheddar Stuffed Potatoes.

- 4 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter (or cooking oil of choice)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour* (see notes)
- 1 cup (8 oz.) lager-style beer, at room temperature * (see notes)
- 1 cup (8 oz.) vegetable broth
- 16 oz. shredded vegan cheese (we used 1 bag of cheddar and 1 bag of mozzarella)
- 1/2 to 1 tablespoon grainy mustard, to taste
- Salt and pepper, if needed to taste
Dippers of choice, such as
- Crackers

Notes
- To be sure if your beer is vegan, check Barnivore.com.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about a week. The fondue will thicken up as time passes. What we like to do it transfer it to a pot over medium heat on the stove and slowly mix in vegetable broth as we warm it to smooth it and thin it out.
- Alcohol is used in fondue not only to add flavor to the dip but to also lower the boiling point and keep the cheese from becoming stringy or curdling.ย Instead of beer, a dry high quality wine would work as well! I have also seen fondues made with brandy or whiskey but I have not tried it myself. If you would like to skip the beer in the recipe, we suggest you use vegetable broth in its place as well as add a squeeze of lemon juice or a touch of vinegar for acidity.
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch can be used in place of the 2 tablespoons of flour.

I used to work at a fondue restaurant when I was 18 and made a lot of cheese fondue. This is the closest I’ve found to that. It is so good it has become a special occasion meal in our house. My kids request it on their birthdays. Delicious! Made with violife brand shreds and GF beer and GF flour worked great.
