This vegan garlic bread is the perfect side dish to serve alongside your favorite comforting pasta or warm soup. Vegan garlic butter brushed generously on a fresh baguette and then baked until crispy and delicious. All you need is 4 ingredients and 20 minutes to make this restaurant-style garlicky goodness.
Garlic bread has always been a favorite of ours growing up, so naturally, we had to create a vegan version and it absolutely hits the spot! Keep this recipe on hand for weeknight dinners, holidays, and more. It’s the perfect way to serve a crowd and no one will guess it doesn’t contain dairy.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Vegan butter – We used salted butter, but unsalted vegan butter will work well too. Just add an extra pinch of sea salt to the butter mixture to add some savoriness. We used Earth Balance, but we also love Country Crock or Miyoko’s Creamery butter. Feel free to use your favorite.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic cloves are essential to the best-tasting garlic bread. At the very least, use a store-bought garlic paste. Garlic powder won’t give your garlic bread that same authentic, garlicky taste.
- Bread – We used a loaf of sourdough, but any loaf of choice will do. Try french baguette, Italian bread or ciabatta!
- Fresh herbs – Finely chopped flat-leaf parsley will add the best, classic flavor, but 1 teaspoon of dried parsley will work in a pinch. Or, opt for 1 teaspoon of an Italian seasoning blend and additional red pepper flakes for a slight kick.
- Vegan parmesan – Adding vegan cheese is optional, but takes this buttery vegan garlic bread to the next level. We used our simple 4-ingredient vegan parmesan cheese but any store-bought vegan parmesan cheese will work. For an even cheesier twist, use a combination of vegan parmesan and vegan mozzarella shreds.
How to Make Vegan Garlic Bread
- Melt the vegan butter. Add the vegan butter to a small bowl and microwave for 20-30 seconds, or until melted.
- Mix in the garlic. Stir until thoroughly combined and set aside.
- Coat the bread slices. Arrange the sliced bread on a lined baking sheet. Using a brush, generously coat each slice with the garlic butter mixture until you have used it all up. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and vegan parmesan cheese.
- Bake. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.
- Broil. Set the oven to broil and allow the bread to bake for 1-2 minutes longer until golden brown. As a general rule of thumb, the longer you broil, the crispier the garlic bread will become.
- Serve. Allow the bread to cool slightly, then serve while warm as desired.

Freshly baked garlic bread will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 48 hours or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To freeze, arrange the baked garlic bread slices on a baking sheet and place them in the freezer for 1 hour to freeze solid. Once solid, transfer the garlic bread to a large gallon-sized freezer bag and remove as much excess air as possible. If freezing for longer term storage in a deep freeze, you can also wrap the bread slices together in aluminum foil before placing in a freezer bag for added preservation.
Thaw at room temperature for a few hours until soft again. Reheat any leftover garlic bread leftovers in the microwave in 10-second bursts, in the air fryer, or in the oven until warm and crispy again.
Most store-bought bread is naturally vegan. It is rare to find a sourdough or baguette that is not naturally vegan as these breads are generally made with very basic ingredients such as flour, water, salt, and yeast. Some store-bought breads like brioche or even sliced sandwich breads can be made with milk and/or eggs so it is a good practice to read ingredients until you identify your favorite vegan-friendly brands!
In our opinion, you can’t go wrong with a fresh loaf of sourdough, but many people swear by a loaf of Italian bread. No matter what you use, look for the softest baguette you can find. The softer, the better!
If your garlic bread is not crispy, it’s possible your oven was not hot enough or it could use a bit longer under the broiler. Ideally, you’ll have a crispy crust but still have a warm, soft and fluffy center. If your bread is not crisped up to your liking, keep it under the broiler until you’re satisfied. Just keep a close eye on it to prevent burning!
This is a sign of overcooked or burned garlic. If you find your garlic is browning too quickly, lightly tent the bread with a sheet of aluminum foil for the majority of the bake.
Tips for Success
- Slice the bread with a serrated knife. This is going to help you see through the bread without smashing it and keep your garlic bread slices nice and fluffy.
- Use fresh bread. Unlike recipes like Classic French Toast where stale, crusty bread is ideal, you want extra fresh, soft bread for homemade garlic bread. Most grocery stores bake fresh bread every morning so shop for the best quality bread earlier in the day when possible.
