Learn how to make perfect Grilled Corn on the Cob in less than an hour!
There are a few different ways to grill corn: in the husk, without the husk, or wrapped in foil. All of them yield slightly different outcomes, but the one thing that they have in common is they help you get perfectly sweet grilled corn!
Soaking the corn before grilling will prevent the husk from catching on fire, and the water will also help steam the corn, resulting in perfectly cooked and juicy corn!
If you don’t want to wait and soak the corn, you can remove the husks completely and place the “naked” corn on the grill to cook for 15-20 minutes.
Picking the Perfect Ear of Corn
Check for holes: When you see holes at the top of the husk, that means insects may be inside. These ears should be avoided.
Check the tassels: if the appear black or dry, the corn is old.
Examine the husks: If they’e vibrant and tightly wrapped, this indicates that the corn is fresh.
Inspect the Kernels: Through the husk, feel to make sure that the kernels are plump and tender. If there are any spots that feel like kernels are missing, it’s best to pass on that ear.
Don’t peel the husk: Many people instinctively peel back the husk on an ear of corn to check that it’s fresh. Doing this will dehydrate the corn and make the kernels lose their sweetness.
Make sure it’s in season: If it isn’t summer time, it’s probably not the best time to be buying fresh corn. Frozen corn may be a better option in the off season.
Storing your corn: If you’re going to cook the corn within the first few hours of bringing it home, you may leave it out at room temperature. If you plan on waiting to enjoy your corn, it’s best to keep it refrigerated in the crisper drawer with the husks still intact.
How to Grill Perfect Corn in the Husk
First up, fill a large pot or bucket large enough to fit all of your corn with cold water. Set this aside.
Next, prep the husks and remove the silks! Remove dry husks or any husks from the corn that is not green and moist. Discard. Cut off the excess on top using scissors.
Carefully peel back husks from corn to within 1″ of the bottom and remove as much silk as you can.
Re-cover the corn with the husk and place the ear of corn into the bucket of water. Repeat with all of your corn. Allow the corn to soak for 20 minutes or up to 8 hours.
Preheat your grill to medium heat. Remove the corn from the bucket and shake off any excess water.
Place the corn onto the hot grill and cover. Allow the corn to grill for 15-20 minutes, turning it every 5 minutes for even cooking. You want the corn to be tender but not mushy.
Remove the corn from the grill. Once it is easy to handle, remove the husks.
Dress up the corn as desired. We like to dress ours with vegan butter, salt, pepper, and parsley. If you want to take it to the next level, we have also served this corn buffalo-style, you can find that recipe here.
