The PERFECT sweet & savory breakfast combo: Avocado French Toast that is vegan & oil-free!

The PERFECT sweet & savory breakfast combo: Avocado French Toast that is vegan & oil-free!

Avocado French Toast — sounds a little whacky, right? Rest assured, when sweet meets savory this classic breakfast is transformed into something magical. It makes for the perfect brunch food, but can honestly be enjoyed at any time of the day. I recommend pairing it with a nice hot cup of coffee or tea and sitting down with a good friend to share together.

The inspiration for this dish came from a vegan tiki bar in New York City called Mother of Pearl. We had the pleasure of going on my birthday this past year and were blown away by the unique dishes offered. As soon as we tasted their Avocado French Toast, we knew we had to recreate it!  We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

For this recipe, we took two fluffy slices of sourdough bread, battered them, and cooked them to golden perfection. Then, we smothered them with vegan cream cheese and avocado, drizzled them with a spicy maple syrup, and BOOM—the perfect blend of sweet, savory, and spicy was born.

This recipe is part of our monthly collaboration with Caitlin of From My Bowl, and this month’s video is all about Vegan Brunch! You can check out our video above.

Caitlin put together these gorgeous Cinnamon Roll Pancakes that are healthy, oil-free and a MUST try brunch recipe. We collaborate with her every month, and the recipes we put together this month have got to be one of our favorites yet.

EPIC Vegan Braided Breakfast Calzone! healthy + oil-free option

We also put together a Vegan Braided Breakfast Calzone — packed with a tofu scramble, a sweet glazed tempeh bacon, vegan cheese, and marinara. It is the perfect dish for savory breakfast lovers and I definitely recommend you check it out.

Avocado French Toast – Sweet & Savory (Vegan & Oil-free)

  • Author: Jasmine @ Sweet Simple Vegan
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 6

Avocado French Toast — sounds a little whacky, right? Rest assured, when sweet meets savory, this classic breakfast is transformed into something magical.

Cashew Butter Batter

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 3 tablespoons raw cashew butter
  • 2 large medjool dates, pitted
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseed meal
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice)

Spicy Maple Syrup

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 12 tablespoons hot sauce (we used Yellow Bird)

French Toast

  • 6 medium slices of sourdough bread*
  • Vegan cream cheese (we used Miyoko’s)
  • 23 avocados, sliced
  • Fresh or dried chives
  • Smoked paprika

  1. Add all of the batter ingredients into a high-speed blender and run until smooth. Pour into a wide bowl (at least wider than the bread you are using), and place into the refrigerator for 30 minutes to thicken.
  2. In the meantime, whisk together the maple syrup and hot sauce in a small bowl until smooth. Set aside.
  3. Once the batter has thickened, prepare a medium nonstick pan or a griddle over medium heat. Take a piece of the bread and soak each side in the batter for 15-30 seconds, the longer the better! Cook for 3-5 minutes on each side, or until dry and golden brown. Continue until you have used all of the batter or bread up.
  4. Cool the french toast a bit, then generously smear on some vegan cream cheese. Layer on the avocado slices, then top with chives, smoked paprika and desired amount of spicy maple syrup.

  • You can use a break of choice, but try to be sure it is dry! If the bread is too moist, the french toast will end up soggy.
  • Nutrition facts takes into consideration 1/2 tablespoon of cream cheese per slice of french toast.
  • Prep Time: 30 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes

  1. What a really unique idea! I’ve never had savoury french toast. I need to give it a try. These pancakes look amazing by the way!

  2. To be honest, I was REALLY confused when I heard about this recipe. But I trusted in you guys and knew that this recipe would be awesome, and it does look awesome indeed! I have heard of avocado in some sweet recipes (not mixed in or in baked recipes, even), and I always thought they’d be wonky. I guess you don’t knock it until you try it!

    1. Haha yes, I totally recommend you try it out! I was a bit skeptical about the combo at first too, but once we made it, it opened me up to a whole new world 😛

  3. This sounds really good for brunch time:) I love to eat avocado in any form. I really looking forward to make this soon in my kitchen also:)
