Animal style fries are taken to a whole new level with this McDonald’s inspired Big Mac version! They are loaded with everything in the infamous dish– crumbled vegan burgers, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, a melty cheese sauce, sesame seeds, and of course, a homemade Big Mac Sauce. Let’s get cooking!
Have any of you tried Animal Style Fries from In-N-Out Burger? I moved to California after I had already gone vegan, so I never really understood the hype of this (not so secret) secret menu item. If you don’t know what animal style fries are, they are basically french fries that are topped with melted cheese, onions and a sauce. The In-N-Out version comes with their signature thousand island dressing.
It was not until I had a veganized version about a year ago at Monty’s Good Burger in Los Angeles that I finally understood just why this dish had such a “cult following”, and I have been hooked on them ever since! Anytime I can get my hands on them, I order them.
A few weeks ago I had the crazy idea of creating McDonald’s inspired animal style fries that modeled after their Big Mac. I thought why not take everything that is usually included in a big mac and instead of serving it on bread, serve it on fries? I tried it out and, well, I’m kind of a genius because this is the BEST version of animal style fries I have tried so far. You’ll agree when you try these!
So what is even on these big mac fries aka Mc Donald’s animal style fries anyways? Well, fries of course (homemade or store bought), along with crumbled vegan burger patties, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, a melty vegan cheese sauce, sesame seeds, and of course, our homemade Big Mac Sauce.

- Total Time: 1 hour
- Yield: About 8 servings
Description
Animal style fries are taken to a whole new level with this McDonald’s inspired Big Mac version! They are loaded with everything in the infamous dish– crumbled vegan burgers, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, a melty cheese sauce, sesame seeds, and of course, a homemade Big Mac Sauce.
Ingredients
- 6 medium russet potatoes (or use frozen french fries)
- 2 vegan burger patties (we used Beyond Burgers)
- 1 recipe Vegan Big Mac Sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded lettuce
- 1 to 2 large tomatoes, diced
- 1/2 cup pickle slices
- 1/3 cup diced red onions
- Sesame seeds
Vegan Cheese Sauce
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter
- 8 oz. shredded vegan cheddar cheese
- 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 1/2 cup almond milk
Instructions
- Prepare the french fries. If you have store bought fries, prepare them according to the package directions. For homemade, preheat the oven to 425ยฐF and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Wash the potatoes and slice them into thin or thick fries, depending on your preference. Place the potatoes in a single layer on the baking sheet (you will need to cook multiple batches/use multiple pans) and dust them with salt as desired. Bake for 25-40 minutes or until golden brown, being sure to flip halfway through. Remove from the oven and set aside.
- Prepare the vegan burger patties. We simply cooked them on a pan according to the package directions and using a wooden spoon, broke them up into crumbles. Set aside.
- Prepare the vegan cheese sauce. In a medium pot over medium-low heat, add in the vegan butter. Once the butter has melted, add in the vegan cheese, nutritional yeast, and almond milk. Whisk everything together until uniform. Continue cooking over medium-low heat, whisking often, until the cheese has melted and the sauce is smooth. Set aside.
- Once the fries are cooked, transfer them to a large serving platter or baking sheet. Drizzle the fries with the vegan cheese sauce, and then add on the vegan burger crumbles, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, red onions and sesame seeds. Lastly, drizzle everything with the vegan big mac sauce as desired.ย
- Serve immediately and enjoy!

I love these! Never heard of them before, but made my kids happy. Just used Daiya shreds for the cheese, but the special sauce was KEY!
Very, very good! Great taste in every bite!
Canโt wait to try more of your recipes!
I made this for my son and me for lunch. I have never had a Big Mac (apparently, I never will!) but my son has. He thought it had a very similar taste to McD’s offering. The cheese sauce looked a bit whack, but tasted very good. He will be using the leftover sauce on everything until it’s gone!
This was AMAZING ๐!!! The flavours all worked so well together! Will be making this again… And again… Thanks so much!!
Vegan animal fries! What?!? Thanks Chris and Jasmine for making a fun and easy recipe for this yummy junk food. I made mine with tater tots and the toppings were so good.
I’m constantly coming back this recipe to make on days I want comfort food or something to munch while binge watching Youtube. I subbed the vegan mayo for a can of chickpeas, which works well! Made this cheese sauce more than once for other recipes, so also highly recommend trying it out with other things you make on the regular.
