There’s nothing like a warm cup of hot cocoa on a cold December day in front of the Christmas Tree ๐ Growing up, my family often gathered around the tree at night and my mom would make us a big pot of hot cocoa to share, so it is definitely a must have tradition for us every year.
This year I thought it would be fun to make a homemade mix to gift to my family + you all as well. Instead of bringing you an average vegan hot cocoa mix, I’m going to share with you a chai spiced one!
This recipe is very simple, and if you don’t want to gift it, you can simply store it in a jar or air tight container to enjoy in your home.
And be sure you purchase vegan marshmallows! Conventional marshmallows are NOT considered to be vegan because marshmallows contain gelatin, which some people may not know is derived from the collagen inside animals’ skin and bones.
And I wanted to address the blotchy appearance of the drinks above. This hot cocoa does not look like that if you follow the recipe, it just happened because we had allowed it to sit out for a long time while photographing for this post. Forgive me! ๐

PrintChai Spiced Hot Cocoa Mix In A Jar – DIY Vegan Holiday Gift
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: About 7 servings
Description
An easy to make vegan hot cocoa mix that is not only delicious but it also makes for the perfect holiday gift.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup cacao powder
- 1/3–1/2 cup organic coconut sugar
- 3 tablespoons dark chocolate chips or chunks
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon ginger
- Pinch of Himalayan salt
- + Vegan marshmallows (optional)
Instructions
- Chop the dark chocolate into small chunks if needed. Add all of the ingredients except for the marshmallows to a food processor or high speed blender and blend all of the ingredients together until uniform.
- Carefully transfer to an airtight container or mason jar and top with vegan marshmallows. You may need 1 to 2 jars depending on the size you use.ย I used a 16 oz jar, and had some leftover to fit in an 8 oz jar, so it was about 24 oz total.
- To serve: In a medium pot over medium heat, whisk 3 tablespoons of the mix together with 1 cup non-dairy milk. Heat just until it comes to a low boil. Remove it from heat and serve with a big dallop of So Delicious Cocowhip and garnishes of your choice. Enjoy!

I made this without the vanilla, nor the marshmallows and it turned out very nice!
In a saucepan I heated 250 ml homemade almond mylk & whisked in 3 tbsp of the chai hot cocoa mix and it turned out very rich and gently sweet, which I prefer. Thanks.
Awesome, thank you for sharing that! ๐
Seems like a magnificent Christmas gift! Do you know how long this hot cocoa mix would last if stored in a cool, dry place?
I am not entirely sure but based on the ingredients I used, and if you use vanilla powder as opposed to a liquid extract, I would say about 2-3 weeks ๐
Hello! This is awesome!! Great job! What size mason jar did you use? And when you filled it, did you have leftover cocoa mix? Want to make these for my team โบ๏ธ
I used a 16 oz jar, and had some leftover to fit in an 8 oz jar, so about 24 oz total! Thanks for pointing that out, I will add that to my post ๐
Thanks a bunch!! ๐
