Today’s recipe is brought to you by the lovely Lauren Toyota of Hot For Food. She just came out with her second cookbook, Hot For Food All Day, and it’s a winner.

We had such a blast making these Tokyo Street Fries. Not only are they super simple to make, but the flavor they pack is also something to rave about. We recently made these for a few guests we had over for a backyard gathering, and everyone loved them as much as us!

Here’s What You Need to Make These Tokyo Street Fries:

  • Tokyo Mix Popcorn Seasoning – This is a blend of seaweed, onion, sesame seeds, nutritional yeast, and salt, that makes for a flavor-packed umami blend worth devouring. The full recipe for this seasoning mix is down in the recipe card!
  • Frozen Shoestring Fries – To make this recipe extra easy, frozen fries are the key! Shoestring fries are recommended, and we personally really like the Alexia brand, but any fries will do!
  • Sriracha Mayo – A simple mix of sriracha and vegan mayo to make for the perfect topping for these fries with a little kick too. We like to use Follow Your Heart vegenaise and Yellowbird Sriracha.
  • Garnish – To add some extra flair to these Tokyo Street Fries top it off with green onion and sprinkle with black sesame seeds.

Description

These Tokyo Street Fries make for the perfect snack or appetizer! They are jam-packed with flavor and are so easy to make.

Ingredients

Tokyo Mix Popcorn Seasoning

  • 1 package (35 oz/10g) or 2 large sheets of roasted salted seaweed snacks
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced onion
  • 2 tablespoons mixed black and white sesame seeds
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

Tokyo Street Fries

  • 1 package (about 20 oz) frozen shoestring fries
  • 1/3 cup vegan mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 1/4 cup Tokyo Mix Popcorn Seasoning
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green onion (white and light green parts)
  • 1 teaspoon black sesame seeds

Instructions

Tokyo Mix Popcorn Seasoning

  1. Use a clean coffee grinder or spice grinder to grind the ingredients to a very fine powder. First, grind the roasted seaweed snacks in batches by adding torn pieces to the grinder to get them into small pieces. The seaweed snacks have additional oil, so they will stick to the sides of the grinder. You might need to stop and start the grinder to push the pieces towards the blade and continue pulsing. Pour into a bowl when each batch is finished. Then add all the small pieces of seaweed back into the grinder with the dried minced onion, sesame seeds, nutritional yeast, and sea salt and pulse to a fine powder. You may have to do this in two batches.

Tokyo Street Fries

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F
  2. Lay out the frozen fries on a baking sheet and even layer and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or according to package directions, until golden brown and crispy.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the vegan mayonnaise and Sriracha.
  4. When the fries or baked immediately transfer to a large bowl and toss with the popcorn seasoning.
  5. Transfer the fries to a serving platter, drizzle with the Sriracha mayo, and sprinkle the green onion and sesame seeds on top.
