Visit Oakland just launched the “Oakland Vegan Trail,” highlighting 20+ restaurants with the best plant-based offerings in the city. It is the ultimate guide on how to eat vegan in Oakland. The vibrant vegan food scene there is like nowhere else and is constantly expanding. There are so many unique and diverse options on the list, they have something for everyone!

A few weeks ago, we had the opportunity to head to Oakland and experience some of the options from the Vegan Trail. We were thoroughly impressed! We were not there long enough to try out all 20+ places, but from what we tried, we know we have to return ASAP to finish the list! Below is a review of the places we have tried so far.
Known for its Filipino-street-food-meets-Mexican-taqueria-mash-up, this place is a must-try when visiting the city of Oakland. It started as a food truck idea between two former high school classmates that has now blossomed into a local phenomenon, with a fleet of four food trucks and two brick & mortars serving the San Francisco Bay Area. Not only do they have vegan options, but they have a *full* vegan menu, loaded with as much flavor and variety as their regular menu. They offer different veganized Filipino protein options that can be served in a few different ways, including burritos, tacos, nachos, fries, and more. No matter what you order, you’re sure to get a kick of Filipino-inspired flare in every bite. If you haven’t yet tried sisig, check out our recipe here if you want to make your own at home!
The only 100% vegan coffee roastery and bakery, open since 2012. They offer stellar plant-based beverages and a wide array of sweet and savory baked goods. All of their products are fresh and made daily in-house! We got to try a wide assortment of their baked goods and have come to the conclusion that there is no wrong choice when coming to Timeless.
This quaint little ice cream parlor in Temescal Alley brings back all the nostalgia of visiting your hometown ice cream shop. Offering vegan scoops, soft serve, ice cream sandwiches, and even cones, curbside always offers a selection of vegan items on their menu. Their artisan quality cashew and coconut-based ice creams are rich, creamy, and the perfect sweet treat on a warm summer day. We got to try both the cookies and cream and peanut butter fudge ice cream flavors when we visited, both were delicious!
Roasted and Raw
Formally a pop-up in Jack London Square, Roasted and Raw just opened a modern cafe-style brick-and-mortar in Oakland, and it did not disappoint. They offer a selection of cooked and raw food with a fresh veggie-centric approach. We enjoyed trying various menu items, including their Orange Teryaki and Kale Caesar Salad bowls. In addition, we loved their mac and cheese and yucca fries.
This Louisiana Creole-style eatery has been an Oakland staple since 2006 and has expanded to 4 locations. Tamearra Dyson, the owner of Souley Vegan, has been cooking her signature plant-based dishes since 18. She started as a stand at the Grand Lake Farmers Market. She even beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network, the first vegan to do so in 28 seasons! Before arriving in Oakland, Souley Vegan was one restaurant we heard so many amazing things about, and we know why after trying it. We ordered a combo plate including mac and cheese, cornbread, and southern fried tofu, with a side of their popular F.L.O.C (FOR THE LOVERS OF CALAMARI), made from hearts of palm. We enjoyed the food at a picnic table by the water in Jack London Square, which is walking distance from the restaurant and highly recommended if you want to take it to go. We definitely can’t wait to go back for more someday soon.
Since 1994, Chef-owner Eric Tucker’s casual but slightly upscale Millennium Restaurant has been committed to providing fresh, innovative vegan cuisine. Their menu constantly changes to showcase local, sustainable, and organic produce at its peak, which makes a trip to the restaurant even more exciting because you’ll probably find yourself with a new menu every time. Thoughtfully blending flavors from around the world with classic techniques, their restaurant is truly one of a kind. Almost all dishes are gluten-free as well. Millennium is constantly busy—reservations are highly recommended.
Millennium Restaurant was awarded a 2016 Michelin Bib Gourmand, has been featured as one of “The Top 25 Vegetarian and Vegan Restaurants in the World” by the Huffington Post and Food & Wine Magazine, and has been named “#1 Vegetarian Restaurant in the World” by The Daily Meal.
