No need for store-bought microwave popcorn again! This quick, cheap and easy snack is great for summer parties or movie nights at home. The fiesta seasoning gives it a unique kick that everyone will love.Today we are sharing with you how to make the perfect stovetop popcorn along with a unique flavor-packed seasoning mixture to top it off with.
We came up with this recipe when we were planning a game night with friends, and it was a huge success and hit all around. It’s definitely a last minute snack idea that can help you out when you don’t have much on hand to prepare for guests, and what is great is that you can make a surplus of the seasoning mixture and store it in the pantry to make this recipe even quicker for the future!
Do you have any go-to recipes that you make for guests when you are short on time? The seasoning mixture takes the cake and is why this recipe is so good. A mixture of nutritional yeast (gotta have cheese on the popcorn), chili powder cumin, garlic, onion, paprika, turmeric,ย and salt! We were inspired by taco seasoning when putting this recipe together and it is exactly what we hope for it to be. Cayenne pepper would be great in it as well if you dig spicy foods! We have made popcorn on the stovetop before, but we would always have a handful of kernels that just straight up burned in the bottom of the pot that we had to toss. I started looking online to see if there were any ways to minimize the burning of the kernels, and I found a really good method from Simply Recipes. They dubbed it “perfect popcorn” and I agree!
We wrote the method out in the recipe card of this post and we are stoked for you to try it out, too!We also put together a video for all of the game night recipes we put together this night, including our Skillet S’mores and Fried Zucchini with Garlic and Vinegar. If you make this recipe, let us know what you think in the comments below! + If you post any photos on Instagram, make sure you tag usย @sweetsimpleveganย and @consciouschris so that we don’t miss it, we love seeing your photos!
PrintEasy Stovetop Popcorn with Fiesta Seasoning
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: 5 servings
Description
No need for store-bought microwave popcorn again! This quick, cheap and easy snack is perfect for summer parties or movie nights at home. The fiesta seasoning gives it a unique kick that everyone will love.
Ingredients
Fiesta Seasoning
- 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon organic chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin
- 1/8 teaspoon turmeric
- 3/4 teaspoons salt*
Stovetop Popcorn
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (for popping)
- 1/3 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
- 2 tablespoons vegan butter
Instructions
- For the seasoning: Combine all of the spicesย for the seasoning mixture in a small bowl.ย Mix until uniform and thenย transfer into a spice or coffee grinder, or even a small food processor. Blend until it becomes a fine powder. Set aside.
- For the popcorn:ย In a large pot over medium-high heat, add in the coconut oil. Once melted, add in 3 popcorn kernels and wait for these to pop. These are the “testers” that will help you determine when the oil comes to the properย temperature for popping.
- Once all 3 kernels have popped, add in the remaining kernels in an even layer, shaking the pot to spread them out. Cover the pot and remove it from heat for 30 seconds. This is to ensure that all of the kernels come to popping temperature before adding it back on the heat, so they will pop at the same time.
- Return the pot to heat. The popcorn should begin popping! Once popping, gently shake the pan by moving it back and forth over the burner. Keep the lid slightly ajar to allow the steam to escape.
- Once the popping slows down (to several seconds between pops), take off the lid and remove the pan from the heat. Dump the popcorn into a large bowl.
- Add the pot back onto medium heat and add in the vegan butter. Heat until melted and then pour over the popcorn. Toss to evenlyย coat.
- Add on your desired amount of seasoning and salt and toss once more to combine. Enjoy!
