Ingredients You’ll Need
For the Chili Lime Tofu
- Extra firm tofu: The best tofu firmness for crisp, chewy bites that hold their shape yet still absorb the flavor in the chili lime sauce.
- Garlic and chili pepper: These aromatics help build a bold, flavorful foundation. For a milder heat, go with a red or green jalapeño. For a hotter heat, opt for a serrano pepper.
- Soy sauce: Adds a deep, salty umami flavor. If you are gluten-free, use tamari instead. Coconut aminos can work in a pinch, but you’ll likely need to add more salt to balance the flavor.
- Lime juice: Brightens the dish and balances the soy sauce and maple syrup. For the best pop of flavor, opt for freshly squeezed lime juice!
- Maple syrup: A touch of sweet maple balances the heat in the chilies and the zing from the lime. Agave nectar is a great substitute.
- Spices: You’ll need a mix of chili flakes, cumin, and salt and pepper to finalize the chili lime sauce.
For Serving
- Lettuce: Look for large, cup–shaped leaves like butter leaves or large romaine hearts.
- Fresh veg: We love julienned carrot, diced cucumber, and creamy avocado, but feel free to load up your wraps with your favorite fresh veggies.
- Cilantro and lime wedges: A final pop of fresh herbs and lime adds freshness to every bite!

How to Make Chili Lime Tofu
- Sauté the garlic and chili pepper. In a large skillet over medium heat, warm the oil. Once hot, add the garlic and chili peppers and sauté until fragrant, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Brown the tofu. Add the crumbled or cubed tofu and continue to cook, stirring frequently, for 5 to 6 minutes or until lightly browned.
- Add the chili lime sauce ingredients. Add the soy sauce, lime juice, maple syrup, chili flakes, and cumin. Stir well and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until the tofu is golden and fully coated.
- Season to taste. Season with salt and black pepper to taste, then remove from the heat and drizzle over the toasted sesame oil, as desired.
Assembling the Lettuce Wraps
Once the chili lime tofu is ready, it’s time for the good part. Carefully peel away whole leaves from the head of lettuce and place your lettuce “cups” on a large plate.
Spoon the tofu into each, then top with julienned carrot, thinly diced cucumber, and sliced avocado. Finish with fresh cilantro and a squeeze of fresh lime juice and dig in!
Storage Instructions
Leftover chili lime tofu will keep for up to 4 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For optimal freshness, store separately from the lettuce cups and produce for topping.
When ready to eat, reheat the tofu in a hot skillet or microwave until warmed through, then assemble with fresh toppings.
Quick Tips
- Use the sturdiest, cup-shaped leaves you can find. While large romaine hearts work, butter lettuce is truly the best lettuce because of its naturally curved shape and ability to hold fillings without tearing.
- Consider pressing your tofu. If you’re using water-packed tofu, pressing it for 20 to 30 minutes before crumbling can help it achieve a firmer, meatier texture.
- Adjust the chili lime seasoning as needed. If you want more zing, add an extra squeeze of lime juice. Want more heat? Add another chili pepper or increase the chili flakes. A splash of soy sauce to deepen the umami flavor and boost the saltiness.
