Learn how to make these decadent 4-ingredient biscuit donuts in just a few simple steps. A treat the whole family will be swooning over.
- 1 (8-count) tube refrigerated canned biscuits* (see notes)
- 1/2 cup organic cane sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon or more, to taste
- Oil, for frying
- In a large bottomed pan or a deep fryer, heat about 2 inches of oil over medium heat( (or 350°F). If you don’t have a thermometer, no worries! We will cover that in the step #5.
- In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon and mix until uniform. Set aside.
- Separate each of your biscuits. Using a donut cutter (or the cap from a soda bottle or water bottle, a shot glass, a cannoli form, or anything you can find with a small hole), cut the center from each biscuit and set it aside. Continue until you have cut all of the biscuits into donuts. Be sure to save the small balls as can fry those up as donut holes!
- Deep Fryer: Line a plate with paper towels and have it ready next to your fryer. Test out the oil — we like to do this by using the donut holes. If the oil is too hot, the dough will fry very quickly and the outside will be come golden brown while the inside will be undercooked. Place a few donuts in the hot oil, being careful not to crowd the pan. Fry until golden brown on one side, and then flip and fry until golden brown on the other side, about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes total. Remove the donuts from the oil and place them onto the paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil. Immediately dunk all sides of the donuts in your cinnamon-sugar mixture and toss around until fully coated. Repeat with additional donuts (and donut holes) and eat while warm!
- Air Fryer: After step 3, generously coat the biscuits with melted vegan butter using a pastry brush. Place them into the basket of an air fryer in a single layer (you will need to do multiple batches depending on the size of your air fryer) and air fry at 350°F for 7 minutes. Remove them from the basket, generously coat them with more melted vegan butter and then coat them with cinnamon sugar. These donuts will not be as fluffy as the fried option but this option still works! All of the batches after the first batch may cook in less than 7 minutes since the basket will already be hot, so be sure to check them after 5-6 minutes.
- Oven-Baked: We have not tested this option yet but we have seen it done on this website and it looks promising. Generously coat the biscuits with melted vegan butter. Place them onto a lined or oiled baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove them from the oven, generously coat them with more melted vegan butter and then coat them with cinnamon sugar.
- Canned Biscuits – We recommend the Immaculate Baking Company Organic Flaky Biscuits, Pillsbury’s Original Southern Homestyle Grands, or Annie’s Flaky Biscuits. All of these are accidentally vegan and work well in this!
- These donuts are best enjoyed fresh, the day they are made. To store these donuts, keep them in an airtight container in a cool and dry area on the counter for 1-2 days. We suggest warming these donuts up before eating them so that they soften up and taste “fresh” again. You can also store your donuts in your fridge for up to 1 week. We suggest removing them from the fridge and allowing them to sit on the counter until they reach room temperature, and also warming them up before enjoying them.
- We have not tested this recipe with fresh biscuits, only with canned. Therefore, we are unable to recommend any variations in cooking times or methods.
