Description

This vegan chia seed caviar is an easy, briny plant-based alternative to caviar. Made with just a few ingredients, it’s perfect for appetizers, toast, and entertaining.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet nori
  • ¾ cup hot water
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • ¼ cup black chia seeds

Ideas for Serving:

  • Toast
  • Crackers
  • Cucumber rounds
  • Vegan cream cheese
  • Fresh dill
  • Chopped chives

Instructions

  1. Blend the nori. Add a sheet of nori to a blender and blend until broken down.
  2. Add the liquid ingredients. Add the hot water, soy sauce, and rice vinegar (if using) to the blender. Blend until combined.
  3. Combine with chia seeds. Add the chia seeds to a small bowl. Pour the liquid mixture over the top and mix until uniform.
  4. Chill and set. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight, until the chia seeds swell into caviar-like beads.
  5. Serve. Stir gently and serve chilled with your favorite accompaniments.

Notes

  • Chia seeds: Black chia seeds give the most caviar-like appearance.
  • Seaweed: If you don’t have nori, kelp granules or dulse flakes work too.
  • Storage: Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 7 days.
