After going vegan 3 years ago, not only have I now grown aware of the foods I am putting into my body, but my awareness has evolved to see that I also must be concerned with what I put onto my body as well.
When I first went vegan, or “vegan” if I should put it, I was only vegan in terms of the food I was orally ingesting. I did not clear out my closet of non vegan products and I did not consider that my beauty and hygeine products, including makeup, shampoo, and face masks, could definitely not be vegan. In fact, about half of what I owned did not have the “this product was not tested on animals” assurance. Once I started to become aware of this fact, I started reading more on the subject and came to learn that 60 percent of what is topically applied to our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream. 60!

But now, I have learned that instead of scouring through the LONG lists of ingredients on beauty products I used to own, I should simply turn to products and companies that use minimal ingredients, and even try DIY options as well. I am slowly starting to release my ideas and product lists on my blog, after careful review and trial and error, as you have seen in my Skin Care post.
This is another installment to that post– a face mask that contains 3 ingredients, and that you can make in the comfort of your own home. I no longer need to spend hundreds of dollars on fancy ass masks from Nordstrom, and neither do you 😉 Plus, like I mentioned, what you apply onto your skin will most definitely be absorbed into your body, so if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t use it. That’s why this mask is comprised of beneficial, health filled ingredients.
This ingredient has a negative electrical charge, which causes it to attract positively charged toxins to itself from your body. Therefore, this clay naturally removes toxins as it pulls and holds onto the toxins. With a pH level of 8.7-9.8, bentonite clay is alkalizing.
You can ingest bentonite clay, as well as apply it topically onto your skin. Although I do feel quite off ingesting it orally, I have read about others doing it without any recorded problems. I suggest you just head to their website here and read to learn more about Redmond’s Bentonite Clay to get your take on the matter.
This bad boy is one of the richest sources of antioxidants that you can provide to your body. As you apply it onto your face, it aids in moisture retention, and also with elasticity and fine lines. It has a soothing affect on the skin, great for sensitive/red areas, and it can help eliminate harmful bacteria that may cause acne. LAst but not least, it is packed with chlorophyll, a componenet to help clean skin and strengthen our tissues.
No wonder this ingredient is hailed to be a superfood! When making this mask, make sure you do not mix with a metal utensil or bowl. Metal will mess with the electrical charge of the clay, and prevent it from being fully effective on your skin! And here I am, all masked up! A mask paired with a fresh young thai coconut is perfect for a treat yo-self type of morning <3
Stir all of the ingredients together* except for the water.
Add a water, 1/2 tbs at a time, until you get a thick creamy paste.
Apply a thin layer on your face, avoiding under the eye.
Let it sit for about 20 minutes, or until to dry.
Rinse face with water, then moisturize.
Notes
-When making this mask, make sure you do not mix with a metal utensil or bowl. Metal will mess with the electrical charge of the clay, and prevent it from being fully effective on your skin!
-I did not use all of the mask, so I put it in a small tupperware and stored it in the fridge. When I used it again, I simply added 1 tbs of water to rehydrate it, and it worked perfectly.
Prep Time:5 mins
